Study. Dr. Joel Wade, a psychology professor at Bucknell University, says that flirting is more about nonverbal cues and body language than it is about actual words or pickup lines. Markham Heid of Men’s Health compiled a list of nonverbal pickup language that will help to win the girl. No satisfaction guaranteed, but still…

Space. You know those guys who have their legs spread all the way open taking up a lot of space? Apparently, Wade’s research suggests that men who “sit at a table with one arm draped over a nearby chair, or lean at the bar with your arms spread apart,” as Heid suggests, you’re showing women that you’re in control of the surroundings.

Space. “Women interpret this as a sign of dominance—a key trait for boosting your attractiveness,” according to Wade, via Heid. We agree with that to a certain extent, sure. It’s sexy to see a man who seems like he’s cool, calm, collected, and in control, no matter where he is — the bar, the office, at home.

Hands. There’s a funny scene in Talladega Nights where the character Ricky Bobby is being interviewed after winning a race, and he says, “I don’t know what to do with my hands,” as he holds them in the air on camera. This is.. apparently not very sexy. And crossing your arms isn’t very sexy either, according to women, and studies.

Cross. “Men who don’t cross their arms are seen as more attractive, active, and persuasive, finds a study in Evolution and Human Behavior,” according to Heid. We agree with this as well. Crossing your arms may convey the sentiment that you’re closed off, not a very open person. Heid suggests when standing or sitting to be as open as possible. “Avoid poses that will constrict or close off your body,” he wrote.

Smiling. Have you ever seen someone from across the bar who is just smiling straight at you, seemingly non-stop? Yeah, how often do you go home with that guy, ladies? Never? Okay, yeah we didn’t think so. But apparently science corroborates this sentiment. Heid wrote, “Women regard too much smiling as a sign of femininity and timidity."

Smile. Sure some ladies might be into a little femininity and timidity, but by and large, it’s a turn-off. But Heid isn’t saying you have to sit there and not show a single ounce of emotion. It’s attractive to see someone who is having a good time with their friends, and seems like someone you could strike a conversation about. Just don’t sit around smiling the entire time without taking a second to breathe.

Friends. Women love to see that you have your own group of friends and that she won’t have to worry about you being too clingy, for sure. And apparently, women also love to observe the way you interact with your other guy friends. You know all those locker-room antics? That apparently is a huge turn-on for women.

Locker-room. “Touching your male friends (with limits, of course) signals social status and dominance, which women dig,” according to Heid. Research published in Social Behavior and Personality corroborates this as well. So clapping your hand on your buddy’s back after a funny joke, something like that, it lets her know you’re a leader, in control.

Face. What are some of your most masculine traits on your face? Your jaw, perhaps. Apparently, it’s a good idea to touch your chin, your jaw, rub your face, scratch your nose. According to Heid, “the lower portion of your face is directly linked with your testosterone levels.”

Copycat. You know how they say opposites attract? Well that may be true, but apparently, if you mirror a woman’s behavior, you can buy yourself a ticket to Getting-Her-Number-Ville. “Mirroring a person’s behavior can make you more appealing to that person,” according to Wade. But there’s a fine line.

Tag. Eye contact, this is the true key to nonverbal flirting. “Men who frequently glance around are more likely to make eye contact with women—and women respond better to guys with whom they’ve already exchanged glances,” Heid wrote. This is totally true, as well.

Eye contact. You definitely will be more open to talking to someone who you’ve made eye contact with a few times, as opposed to someone who just walks up to you out of nowhere from some corner of the bar where you didn’t see them. So a bit of eye tag is a lot of fun. It turns up the heat without having to even touch the oven, so to speak.

End. That’s it. A little eye contact, touch of the jaw, slap your pals on the back, smile a little less, and appear open. That is the key to locking the girl down. The one you’ve been looking at from the bar. Now you’ve got to just get up and go talk to her.
