Premarital sex and divorce. A new study has uncovered a link between premarital sex and divorce. In fact, the research has found that the number of sexual partners you’ve had could determine whether or not your marriage will last. As it turns out, if you’ve had 10 or more partners prior to your special day, well… things aren’t looking good for you.

The study. Going back as far as the 1970s, Nicholas H. Wolfinger, professor of Family and Consumer Studies at the University of Utah, analyzed statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Survey of Family Growth. The result? According to the Daily Mail, Wonfinger found that since 2000, ladies with 10 or more partners were the most likely to call it quits.

The study. In other words, the study found that for women marring since 2000, those with 10 or more partners were the most likely to divorce. But there’s a catch. According to Wolfinger, this only became apparent in recent years.

The study. "The highest five-year divorce rates of all are associated with marrying in the 2000s and having 10 or more premarital sex partners: 33 percent," Wolfinger wrote in the report, according to the Daily Mail. "Perhaps it is not unexpected that having many partners increases the odds of divorce.” (Is 10 sexual partners really considered “many”? Yikes.)

The study. "The greater surprise is that this only holds true in recent years; previously, women with two partners prior to marriage had the highest divorce rates,” Wolfinger continued. Additionally, Wolfinger concluded that women with three to nine partners were less likely to divorce than ladies with only two partners before marriage. Sounds like we’re all getting divorced then.

The study. But what about the select ladies who were virgins on their wedding night? What were their chances of divorce? Apparently, women who still had their V-cards on their wedding night were the least likely to get divorced, the study found, with only five percent of them walking away from their marriage. (Hi, Christians.)

Why. So, what gives? Well, Wolfinger explained the study’s findings by pointing out that one of the most common reasons for abstinence before marriage is religion. (Like we said: Christians.) "These findings make sense in light of the fact that people who attend church frequently have lower divorce rates than do non-participants," he said.

Increases. Moreover, Wolfinger noted that the study found two specific increases in rates. One, more women are having premarital sex now than in the 1970s. And two, more women are getting divorces now than the ‘70s. A double-whammy, indeed.

Surprising? While we here at Rebel Circus definitely found the study’s findings a bit, um, surprising (10 partners is a lot? really?!), Wolfinger didn’t. What’s more, he thinks most people will agree with him! He said: "It won’t be surprising to most readers that people with more premarital sex partners have higher divorce rates, broadly speaking."

Reactions. "Both hubby and I are well into double figures,” user “Lanabelle3” shared. "14 years later and still together. Don't believe this rubbish. It depends solely on your relationship.” (We agree!)

Reactions. One woman pointed out that the fact the study was conducted in Utah was pretty fishy in itself. "Of course the study is done by a professor in Utah,” she wrote. "Trust me I lived there for 6 months while my husband opened a branch of his company 90% of everyone in Utah is Mormon. Worst and most boring 6 months of my life and we lived in a gorgeous Penthouse in downtown Salt Lake City right next to the capital.”

Reactions. And last but certainly not least, one user noted that the study was only done on women — where’s the stats on the men and how many sexual partners they’ve had prior to their marriage? Figures.
