Sex at night is fine and all, but only hooking up post-dinner or drinks gets old. Morning sex, however, goes beyond just switching things up—it has extra health benefits too.
So, stop hitting snooze and spend those 20 extra minutes hitting it instead. Here’s why:
1. It’s one of the best ways to start the day.
We all know that the mornings where we squeeze in a little self-care (e.g., working out, meditating, eating a healthy breakfast) tend to make us feel unbeatable for the rest of the day. So why shouldn’t the same apply to sex, especially if it leads to an orgasm? According to one 2010 study, having sex in the morning can make you feel upbeat for the rest of the day. “Having sex in the morning releases oxytocin, also known as the cuddle hormone,” says sexpert Emily Morse. “Oxytocin makes you feel more connected with your partner and more loved. These warm feelings will stay with you throughout the day or at least throughout the morning commute.”
2. It won’t mess with your sleep schedule.
Ironically, going to bed way later because you had sex can not only make you groggy the next day, but it can also mess with your sex drive in the long run, as a good night’s rest and your sex drive are directly correlated. What’s the fun of having an orgasm if it ultimately makes you exhausted the next day?
3. You won’t feel pressure to have sex when you’re tired.
Sex after a full day of work—and especially after a big dinner and glass of wine—can feel so tiring to even think about, no matter how much you love your partner. Pushing yourself to perk up because of some societal standard of Night-Sex Only is a surefire buzzkill. Why not binge that TV show, cuddle, and bone in the morning, when you’re both rested and happy???
4. You get a much better view of, well, everything.
Night lighting is cool and all, but sometimes the hottest sex involves seeing everything in plain view (it’s also the most vulnerable, which can bring you closer!). Seeing every detail of that peen/chest hair is, again, a solid way to start the day.
5. You can hack it so you won’t be late for work.
You and your partner probably want to shower anyway, so cut down on time by showering together and get dirty (whaaaaat) before you get clean. “For the best water-sex position, bend over while they enter from behind,” Morse says. Avoid slipping and falling by holding on to a wall or shower door or putting down one of those rubber mats. And be sure to use silicone-based lube, as water-based washes right off!
6. You have an excuse to be lazy (and have bad breath).
Hey, it’s still the morning, so you have every excuse to be a wee bit sleepy and a whole lotta lazy. But honestly? Marathon, legit-calorie-burning sex has a time and place, and so does a laid-back quickie. Just do doggy style or spooning positions, suggests sexologist Megan Stubbs, EdD, to keep any morning breath or eye boogers away.
7. It allows you to stay in bed just a little longer.
Especially on a weekend morning, this is the best!
8. It keeps you healthy.
According to research, morning sex can actually strengthen your immune system by boosting your levels of IgA, an antibody that protects against infection.
9. Your partner might last longer.
Stubbs says that men’s testosterone levels are highest in the morning, after they’ve had a chance to recharge from sleeping. Which means that not only will your boo be at their horniest when they wake up, but they’ll probably last longer too. As sex therapist Arlene Goldman, PhD, has said, “When men have higher testosterone and are well-rested, they have more energy during sex. That energy will help them last longer.” So you can be lazy, and they can do all the work. Perfect!
10. More people do it than you think.
Not that you need anyone else to validate the sex you want to have, but a solid 34 percent of people prefer to make love in the morning than any other time, according to one poll. And for good reason! (See above.)
